Unraveling the Nuances of Speech

The eleventh edition of the Summer School in Language Documentation (LDSS25), hosted by the DISTU Department of the University of Tuscia and organised in collaboration with the Free University of Bozen, the Ethnorêma Association, and the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, this year focuses on dialectological documentation (previous Summer School edition here).
Therefore, this summer, we will delve into methods and practices of dialectological research. Our curriculum is designed to equip you with the essential tools and knowledge needed to document and analyse regional and social dialects. You will learn to:

  • Master Data Collection Techniques: Explore a range of methodologies, from traditional elicitation and surveys to innovative digital approaches. Gain hands-on experience in recording, transcribing, and annotating dialectal data.
  • Navigate the Ethical Landscape: Understand the crucial role of ethical considerations in language documentation. We’ll discuss best practices for community engagement, informed consent, and the responsible handling of linguistic data.
  • Unlock the Secrets of Legacy Materials: Discover the wealth of information hidden within historical dialect recordings, texts, and archives. Learn how to analyse and revitalize these valuable resources for contemporary research.
  • Engage in practical fieldwork: Participate in fieldwork organised in Canepina, collaborating with native speakers and the local Pro Loco, and enriching your experience with a visit to the Museum of Popular Art and Trades.
  • Engage in Practical Workshops: Participate in interactive sessions led by leading experts in dialectology, phonetics, sociolinguistics, and related fields.
  • Foster Collaborative Research: Connect with fellow researchers and build lasting professional networks. Share your insights, collaborate on projects, and contribute to the ongoing valorisation and preservation of linguistic diversity.
